FAQs

Practice Training (New Framework)

1. My practice training contract is with a Singapore law practice which is only able to expose me to a Core Seat. Can I still serve my practice training period with them?

A: A Singapore law practice which can only expose a practice trainee to a Core Seat may arrange for him or her to be rotated to another Singapore law practice for the purposes of completing the Secondary Seat requirement. Please see the Practice Training Period Guidelines 2024 for the applicable requirements.

2. Must each Seat be completed over a discrete period?

A: Seats can be completed simultaneously. Nonetheless, the Institute recommends that as far as possible, practice trainees be allowed to dedicate at least 6 continuous months to their Core Seat, and at least 3 continuous months to a Secondary Seat.

3. The practice area that I am interested in is not in the list of Practice Areas with available checklists.

New Practice Areas may be added on an ad hoc or permanent basis. A Singapore law practice interested in proposing a new Practice Area may submit its proposed checklist for that Practice Area for the Institute’s consideration.

4. Can I work-from-home when serving my Practice Training Period with a Singapore law practice and/or qualifying entity?

A: Currently, there is no restriction against work-from-home arrangements for practice trainees provided that the practice trainee is able to serve the practice training period under supervision, and the supervising solicitor / supervisor is able and willing to certify that he or she did in fact supervise the work of the practice trainee in the practice of Singapore law during the period that the practice trainee worked under a work-from-home arrangement.

A practice trainee must be based in Singapore during the practice training period.
