Continuing Professional Development (‘CPD’)

Overview

Continuing professional development (“CPD”) is a systematic and sustained process by which lawyers not only maintain but also improve and expand their professional knowledge and skills.

A mandatory CPD scheme was introduced in 2012. The CPD Scheme is administered by the Institute and formalises the individual solicitor’s responsibility and commitment to being a professionally competent and relevant practising member of the Singapore Bar.

CPD Requirements under the CPD Scheme include:

  • undertaking CPD Activities and obtaining CPD Points from these activities;
  • keeping records and evidence of CPD Activities undertaken; and
  • verifying compliance with CPD Requirements if required by the Institute.

Detailed information on the CPD Scheme may be found at silecpdcentre.sg.

CPD Points Requirements

All advocates and solicitors admitted to the Singapore Bar and holding Singapore Practising Certificates, and foreign lawyers registered under section 36B of the Legal Profession Act 1966, must meet the CPD requirements set out in the Legal Profession (Continuing Professional Development) Rules 2012, the Guidelines on the Continuing Professional Development Scheme 2017 and the Guidelines on Mandatory Category of CPD Activity (Ethics And Professional Standards Activities) 2024.

The CPD Year runs from 1 January to 31 December each year. Lawyers must fulfil their CPD Points Requirements for a given CPD Year by 31 December of that year.

How to obtain CPD Points

The Calendar of Accredited Learning Activities (“CALAS”) at silecpdcentre.sg/calas contains a listing of Accredited CPD Activities, which lawyers can attend to obtain Public CPD Points.

Private CPD Points are obtained by undertaking a range of other CPD Activities, such as attending in-house seminars and reviewing multimedia, Internet-based or audio-visual programmes or materials.
