Registration and Approval

The manner of service of the practice training period must be registered with the Institute up to 6 weeks before and no later than 14 days before the commencement of the practice training period pursuant to S41(1) of the Legal Profession (Admission) Rules 2024. Failure to do so may result in any period served prior to the lodgement of the registration being disregarded.

  • Registration and approval of the manner of service under a practice training contract with a Singapore law practice must be completed using the prescribed Forms.

  • Registration and approval of the manner of service under a practice training contract with a qualifying entity must be completed using the prescribed Forms.

  • Registration and approval of the manner of service through working as a Judicial Service Officer, Legal Service Officer, or under the supervision of a Qualifying Relevant Legal Officer must be completed using the prescribed Forms.

The Institute is developing an online system to enhance the registration of the practice training contracts. We will be holding a briefing for Singapore law practices on the online system and its functions targeted in February 2025.  More details on registration will be released in 2025.

 

IMPORTANT:

 
 
  1. The Singapore Institute of Legal Education (the “Institute”) would like to remind all Singapore law practices accepting practice trainees, Legal Service Officers, Judicial Service Officers, qualified persons, and eligible persons intending to apply for admission as advocates and solicitors of the following important requirements under the Legal Profession (Admission) Rules 2024 (“Admission Rules 2024”).

  2. The Practice Training Period must be registered with the Institute at least 14 days prior to its commencement. The prescribed form may be downloaded here, and the registration form may be submitted as early as six weeks before the commencement of the Practice Training Period.

  3. Any period served that is unregistered will not be counted towards the Practice Training Period for the purposes of Rule 29 read with Rule 41 of the Admission Rules 2024.

  4. If there are any changes to the manner in which the Practice Training Period is served, the Institute must be notified as soon as possible and no later than 14 days after the change. If the Institute is not notified, the period served will not be counted towards the Practice Training Period.

  5. If any period that is deemed unregistered cannot be counted towards the Practice Training Period, candidates will be required to complete the shortfall within the relevant time period. Under Rule 32 of the Admission Rules 2024, the practice training period must be completed within a continuous period of 16 months. If the requirements are not met, candidates may apply for an exemption from the Ministry of Law, with applicable fees to be paid.
